Mary Ann Pevreal
On 22 July 1863 William Paveral and his family arrived in Auckland New Zealand aboard the “Portland “The ship had left London Docks on 28 April, leaving Gravesend on 30 April making the fastest London to Auckland voyage to that date On the passenger list for the "Portland" the families surname is listed as "Protherve"
The New Zealander 23 July 1863 p2
Daniel Dee Hyde and MARY ANN PAVERAL his 2nd wife probably meet as a result of both Daniel and William Paveral's (Mary’s father) membership in the 4th Waikato They would have met at Otahuhu or Onehunga Auckland before the militia was sent to Hamilton. Daniel was living in Onehunga after he arrived in NZ, according to the first Intention to marry document he signed and William was recruited at Onehunga in July 1864. But they would have been thrown together once they were sent to the war zone/fort of Hamilton - although I’m not sure if women and children were sent with the men at first, but where else could they go?
The most surprising thing to me is that Mary Ann agreed to marry a widower with 2 children, single marriageable women were very scarce on the New Zealand frontier in the 1860s, all those single soldiers/farmers in the north and gold miners in the south of New Zealand she could have had any man she wanted
Mary and Daniel where married on the 18 November 1865 at the Registrar office Hamilton New Zealand
Most of the men like Daniel Dee Hyde were Aussie goldminers and had no experience of farming, and certainly not at farming in NZ bush and swamp. They quickly sold their allotted land and left. I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel Dee stayed at the insistence of his wife Mary Ann, to be near her mother and other family members. They would have offered more support than her boozy husband. Daniel Dee Hyde probably drank their own property away.
In the Will of her mother, Elizabeth Pevreal nee Rossiter it shows that Daniel Dee and Mary Ann Hyde were living in one of Elizabeth`s cottages by 1891
The reason I think he drank can be found in the following article even though it was a few years into their marriage
Daniel listed his occupation as a waiter Plumber, Railway Employee and various other things during the early years but it is very clear that he relied on his apprentership as a Tinsmith much of the time
Found in a Wises directory:
1872-1873 (p12) Hyde DD tinsmith ,Great South Rd,Otahuhu
1875-1876 no DD Hyde listed
1887-1888 (p723) Hyde DD tinsmith Hamilton

Was Mary Ann Paveral a church going person? Both her marriages took place in Registry office (Mary married Joseph Reynolds on the 16 april 1903) rather than at a church. While it is possible that there was no church in Hamilton in 1865 there definitely was one in Auckland in 1903. Also it would, I thought have been "not Quite Proper" to have a Registry marriage back in 1903. Other members of her family were buried from church services (newspaper reports), her parents were married in the Established church in Hewelfield England and she was probably christened there but I suggest an anti-church attitude.
I think Mary Ann must have been a woman of strong character to take her husband Daniel and the local Pub keeper to court. Alcohol abuse was higher in the late 19th century than at present, there was no social welfare, women did not have paid employment and wife desertion was common. As a mother of a large family; Mary must have struggled at times to feed and cloth her children. Prohibition was a major Feminist issue in the 1880 and 1890s, so I think her actions might have been based more on survival than moral Religious beliefs.
Daniel Dee died on the 23 November 1894 from a heart attack followed by a stroke .His death certificate can be found at the New Zealand BDM registry folio #1848. His obituary was in the Waikato Times dated 24 November 1894 The funeral was on the 27 November 1894 at the Hamilton West Cemetery where he was buried .The cortege was a large one and included nearly the whole of the surviving members of the 4th Waikato Regiment who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed comrade
