William Peveral

WILLIAM PEVERAL

Please note that there are quite a few ways to spell Williams surname ie Peveral, Putheroe, Pevreal, Peveril Petherell and Protheroe which as you can imagine has made the trail more difficult to follow at times. Putheroe is the name that appears on early legal documents in New Zealand relating to the family, even after they were using Pevreal as their family name
I’m uncertain why official records used Peutheroe William and Elizabeth couldn’t read or write they signed their wills with their mark and perhaps there was confusion among officials recording uncommon names correctly

I’m not 100% sure about William Paveral`s birth date, I have 3 sources of information:
(1) Death certificates are notoriously unreliable, as they rely on the word of other people
(2) His enrolment entry for the 4th Waikato Militia shows his age in 1864 as 40 making him born in 1824, this is suspicious as one of the conditions for enlistment was that no man above the age of 40 will be accepted (this information can be found in the book "Armed Settlers in Hamilton 1864 to 1874 " by H.C.M Norris) He might have lied to the army, they probably wanted to sign up every man they could and wouldn't be too fussy, how could they check births for people born before civil registration? Even if they wanted to write to Hewelsfield to see if his birth date was correct, it would have taken at least 6 months before they could expect a reply, more likely 9 month to a year
(3) The 1851 Census for Gloucestershire Hewelsfield shows his age as 32 making his year of birth about 1819
Going on the reasons explained in item (2) I find the year of 1819 more acceptable as he had no reason to lie in the census taken in 1851.

WILLIAM PEVERAL was born in 1819 in Hewelsfield Gloucestshire England. His parents were William and Sarah nee Jones

William Peveral's parents: William Peveral and Sarah Jones.
They were married 1 June 1806 in Bristol at either St Nicholas or St Leonards "both of this parish, by banns". I got that from Ancestry English Parish Records. I
tried to check it out by ordering the films at the Palmerston North FHC, but
there are seven films all told As there are no other Peverals in any of the Gloucester records that I have looked at I'm pretty sure that that is them. I tried to find the baptism of Sarah Jones, but the only one I could find was "25 Dec 1778 Sarah, daughter. of John and Rebecca Jones - a year and a half old". That's too early if Sarah's age at her burial is correct, and Jones is such a common name. I couldn't find a baptism for William snr.
William Peverall Hewelsfield appears on the 1832 Gloucestershire
Electoral Roll as a freeholder. Only about 20% of males were eligible to
vote in that election, and no females. This would indicate that the
Peverals were reasonably well off. Details from an Index - fiche held at NZSG library

In the 1861 Census of Hewelsfield Gloucestershire England
Harriet Louisa Pevreal wasn’t on the family record .she could have been working anywhere????
And neither was Sarah Ann Pevreal but she got married in 1860 to John Thomas King so she would be living as Husband and Wife somewhere else
After some research I have found a copy of the family entry for 1861 census – for Sarah and John King they were still in Hewelsfield. Sarah lived separately with husband John King and son William.

Little is known about the life of the family in Hamilton. In Elizabeth`s " Will " are details of property they owned ,it includes Mary Ann Hyde`s right to live till her death in a cottage owned by Elizabeth and then Mary Ann's daughter ,Eliza Hyde .It took 14 years before probate ( the official proving of a Will as authentic or valid ) was finally granted on Elizabeth`s Will .Children listed on Elizabeth`s Will are
Harriet Louisa Richard Sarah Crawford
Mary Ann Hyde William Henry Putheroe
George Putheroe Israel Evans Pytheroe

Elizabeth got remarried in 1872 ,to John Deegan .Their marriage certificate can be found at the New Zealand BDM register folio # 660 . I suspect that John Deegan is buried in Waihi NZ . In his Will written on 25 November 1896,the day he died it says he lived in Waihi ,probably lived with or near George Pevreal as he was the sole beneficiary and executor of his estate

Both Wiliam Pavreal and Elizabeth Deegan are buried together at Hamilton West cemetery ,listed under Pavreal #439 . There is no sign of John Deegan . The headstone reads :
William Pavreal died 07 February 1872 aged 52 also Elizabeth Deegan died 20 April 1894 aged 74
Elizabeth`s death records can be found at New Zealand BDM register Folio #648

The following is information I have on the children of William Paveral and Elizabeth Rossiter (there were no known children in Elizabeth`s 2nd marriage)

Sarah Ann Paveral was married twice . Her first marriage was to John Thomas King in 1860 at St Marys Hewelsfield Gloucesterfield England .Sarah was aged 17 and John was aged 19
They had 2 children William Henry Thomas King born 1860
Mary Elizabeth King born 1876 in Auckland NZ
Sarah Ann Paveral`s second marriage was to Charles Arthur Crawford in 1878 in Greymouth New Zealand
The marriage of Sarah Ann King and Charles Arthur Crawford can be found at the NZ BDM Folio #413
Charles was born in 1841 in Pittsburge USA and died 17 September 1906 in Wellington NZ ,he is buried in the Karori cemetery

Harriet Louisa Paveral was also married twice ,she married Andrew Smith on 23 August 1865 at St Mary`s New Plymouth NZ.This information can be found at the NZ BDM folio #575
Andrew Smith was born in 1835 (I do not know where he was born) and died 1872 at Patea New Zealand
It took us a long time to find out why Harriet`s married name in her mother`s will is Richard, then I found the following at the New Zealand Register BDM folio #1883/1806 Harriett Louisa Smith/George Pickering Richard
Israel Evans Paveral married Ellen Pratt on 26 July 1884 at the Hamilton NZ Registra office NZ BDM #2071
Ellen Pratt was born between 1863 and 1865. They had 5 children
Elizabeth Ellen born 02 November 1885 at Hamilton NZ
Amelia Emily born 23 May 1887 at Hamilton NZ
Alice May Paveral
Andrew Paveral born 09 March 1889 at Hamilton NZ
Thomas Henry born 16 June 1892 at Hamilton NZ

George Pearson Paveral married Mary Millan on 17 May 1880 at the Hamilton NZ Registrars office .There marriage certificate can be found at the NZ BDM folio# 878.. Mary Millan was born in 1858 and she died 15 August 1944 ,she is buried at the Hillsborough cemetery Auckland
George`s second wife was Isabella Cochran They got married in 1885 at Point Chevalier Auckland .There marriage certificate can be found at the NZ BDM folio #117 .I do not know when Isabella was born but she died in 1918
As you can see the dates show that he remarried before his first wife died so I think by this that George divorced his first wife and then got remarried.
Isabella and George had 7 children
Elizabeth Stewart born 1886 in Auckland NZ NZ BDM folio #1885/3506
Christina born 1887 in Drury NZ
William Henry born 1888 in Drury NZ NZ BDM folio #2383
Herbert Andrew
George Robert born 1900 in Gisborne NZ
Alfred John born 1891 in Drury NZ died 15 June 1915
George Walter born 1898 in Gisborne NZ died same year

William Peveral and Elizabeth Rossiter had another daughter,
Elizabeth, born 1853. This birth record is on the FreeBDM web site, and as there were no other Peverals near Chepstow, we can be sure that she is their daughter. As we had no record of her, I looked at the GRO death records on fiche at National Library and found her death in the December quarter of 1854 – I figured it would be close to her birth, as most kids died in infancy. I don't intend to get the certificates. It would be good to see the Hewelsfield parish records, to confirm a christening and burial. George Peveral's birth is also on FreeBDM, and others might have been added since last I looked.
